Estill County Judge Taylor Upset With State Agreement
Friday’s announced agreement between the state and Advanced Disposal systems concerning the illegal dumping of low-level radioactive waste has Estill County Officials surprised and upset.
“I got a call late Friday afternoon and said this was coming out, we never heard nothing about this. I’m appalled by the state not informing us of what was going on,” Estill County Judge Executive Wallace Taylor said. “I don’t know who bought who off, but we’re not done yet. This is my town for my people and we’ll fight to the end.”
The state Environmental Cabinet announced the agreement that includes a $95,000 civil penalty for Advance Disposal Services Blue Ridge Landfill in Estill County.
According to reports obtained through the state cabinet’s investigation 92 loads of waste was illegally brought from West Virginia to the Blue Ridge landfill in violation of state law.
“It doesn’t matter to me what the state has agreed to. The state has kept us out of the loop in this whatever agreement they are doing,” said Judge Taylor. “We are going to proceed with the local ordinances they broke, we’re going to proceed with the host committee they broke.”
Part of the fine paid by the company will go to the Estill County School District to pay for detection and mitigation of radon.
The proposed agreement is open to public comment through November 21,2016.
