Bluegrass Stockyard Destroyed By Fire

A three alarm fire early this afternoon has destroyed the Bluegrass Stockyards, a Lexington landmark for the past 70 years.

According to officials the fire started just before 2:30 p.m. On Lisle Industrial Avenue, off of Leestown Road.
Wind gusts hampered firefighting efforts and enabled the fire to quickly spread destroying six other businesses.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing explosions and black smoke could be seen for miles. Firefighters say it was the biggest fire in the city in the last 30 years.

There were no injuries reported .

Stockyard officials did not have a count on the livestock, however they say the loss would be minimal.

The cause of the blaze is unknown and remains under investigation.
